Technical Graduate Administrative Fellow
University of Oregon, Historic Preservation Program
Pacific Hall 234, 5233 University of Oregon, Eugene, OR 97403

The primary duty of the Historic Preservation Technical GAF was to maintain and update the Program’s website.  I gave the site a complete overhaul with new structure, expanded content, and updated images.

  • January 1997 - August 1999

Office Assistant & Gift-Shop Manager (starting Jan. 1997)
Membership & Public Relations Coordinator (starting Oct. 1998)

Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation
123 Canon Perdido, Santa Barbara, CA 93101

Working in any non-profit agency requires flexibility.  In addition to prosaically answering the telephones, I was also involved in office management, research, archaeology, collections management, printing and publications, event planning, promotion, and many other aspects of daily operations.

  • August 1997 - July 1998

Shipping Manager & Assistant Cartographer
Channel Crossings Nautical Charts
125 Harbor Way #21, Santa Barbara, CA 93109

Assisted in the production of a chart of San Pedro Channel & Los Angeles.  Began initial research and design for another of San Diego Bay.

  • November 1996 - August 1997

Assistant Director
Karpeles Manuscript Library and Museum
21 W. Anapamu Street, Santa Barbara, CA 93101

The KML&M consists of a collection of 1,000,000 original documents owned by David Karpeles.  Duties involved database maintenance, employee training, events management, and visitor relations.

  • August 1995 -March 1997

Sales-Clerk, Shift-Supervisor
Earthling Bookshop
1137 State Street, Santa Barbara, CA 93101

Though it has since fallen victim to the chain store wars, during my time there the Earthling was one of the largest and busiest independent bookstores in California.  The store and its employees strived to be on the forefront of active retailing with book signings, lectures and presentations.  While my duties included customer assistance, I was also responsible for shaping the store’s image through displays which were frequently connected to community events and arranging for local artists to exhibit their works in the store.

  •  Fall 1989 - Spring 1991

Store Assistant, Special Exhibit Store Assistant Manager
Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History
2559 Puesta del Sol Road, Santa Barbara, CA 93109

The museum store prided itself on supporting the growing folk art boom.  As such it operated like a gallery with featured artists.  Working in sales and displays required specific knowledge of the artists, their traditions and technologies.
